Cloud AI feels like a confidant, so you tell it things you’d tell no-one – your diagnosis, your relationship, the 3am fear you’ve told no-one else. Every word lands on someone else’s servers: theirs to store, mine and sell. Shrug that off for your shopping habits if you like. Not for this. You can’t unshare your soul.
Ostler thinks on your Mac. What you tell it never leaves – no servers, no meter, no surprise charges, no-one selling you back to yourself. That’s yours the moment it runs, and stays yours whether or not you ever pay us again. Why local wins
Pro ($9.99) keeps it alive: catching every new message, meeting and mail as life happens, keeping it all working as Apple and WhatsApp change under your feet, and turning it into a brief before you walk in and a nudge when something needs you. Cancel any time – you keep everything; it just stops keeping up.
Local 9B models are not GPT-4. For cutting-edge reasoning, frontier coding and creative writing, cloud models are still better. But for 80% of daily AI tasks – summarising, searching, drafting, answering questions, meeting notes – local models are good enough. And they know your life. Not the smartest AI on earth. The smartest AI about your life.
Ostler keeps working. There is no server to switch off: the app, the AI models and your data all live on your Mac, and nothing phones home to ask permission to run. If Pro lapses – or we do – everything you have built stays exactly as you left it, readable and searchable; it simply stops ingesting new life.
And your data was never trapped to begin with: conversation notes are Markdown, the graph exports as Turtle or JSON-LD, vectors as JSON, observations as SQLite. Any tool, today or in twenty years, can read what Ostler knows about you. No SaaS can make that promise. That is the point of local.
One licence. Runs on any Apple Silicon Mac – Mac Mini, Mac Studio, iMac, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro. The more memory your Mac has, the smarter it gets. No cloud bill. No token limits.
A Mac Mini, Mac Studio or iMac sat on a desk means Ostler is ready the second you are. Your iPhone always reaches the Hub. Briefings fire on schedule. Messages to your assistant are answered in real time. Even a docked MacBook with the lid open does the same job.
Same product, portable. When the lid is closed, captures queue locally and your assistant catches up the moment you open it again. Ostler’s services and your local model pause on battery to protect battery life. The iOS app shows a clear Online / Catching up / Offline pill so you always know the state. One licence. Your call which Mac wears the Hub hat.
Ostler asks for standard macOS permissions. Decline any of them and that feature is simply skipped.
| Contacts | Reads your name (to pre-fill setup) and exports contacts into your knowledge graph. Required. |
| Files & Folders | Scans Downloads for the data export files you have requested from LinkedIn, Facebook and the rest. Optional – you can point to a folder manually. |
| Full Disk Access | Instant data from Safari history, iMessage, Apple Notes, Calendar, Photos face labels, Reminders and Mail. Recommended – this is how you see value in minutes. Can be granted later. |
All data stays on your Mac. Nothing is sent anywhere. These are standard Apple security prompts that every Mac app must request.
Hub stays yours forever. Your wiki, your timeline, your people graph, Ostler chatting locally over your snapshot, the Mac app, iMessage and WhatsApp access to your assistant – all of it keeps working whether or not Pro is active.
When Pro pauses, the ongoing intelligence pauses with it. New iMessage threads, new emails, new browsing, new photos – those stop flowing into the graph until you restart Pro. The data you already have is untouched.
Soft-landing grace. When Pro first lapses, ingestion keeps running for 14 more days before the gates take effect. That covers a billing hiccup or a brief intentional pause without breaking anything.
Offline grace. If the Hub cannot reach your iPhone to confirm Pro status, it allows ingestion to keep running for 30 days before pausing – so a holiday with no signal does not penalise you. The Hub Doctor surfaces a notice if this is happening.
Always-available export. Your data lives in plain Markdown under ~/Documents/Ostler/ on your Mac, plus standard local databases (Qdrant JSON, Oxigraph Turtle / N-Triples / JSON-LD, SQLite). Export everything any time. Subscription state never gates your data.
If you restart Pro, everything picks up from where you left off. Your graph is waiting.
The Hub is non-refundable once delivered. The import runs immediately on purchase and writes the result to your Mac in standard open formats. Once that is done you have already received the value of the product.
If you are an EU or UK consumer, the Stripe checkout asks you to tick a box consenting to immediate digital-content delivery and acknowledging that you waive your 14-day right of withdrawal under EU CRD 2011/83/EU Art. 16(m) and UK Consumer Contracts Regs 2013 reg. 37(1)(a). Without that consent the purchase cannot complete. Your mandatory statutory rights for non-conforming digital content are unaffected.
